Five things to look forward to at magCulture’s 5th ModMag

by Grace Wang in August 2017

MagCulture’s Modern Magazine conference presents some of the most exciting figures in publishing at an all-day event in London, and we’re very much looking forward to this year’s instalment. Here’s a quick roundup of last year’s event, to give you a sense of the energising, inspiring talks that would take place.

This year, they’re going even bigger, and we’ve asked magCulture’s Stephanie Hartman to give us five things attendees can expect at the November event…

1. Last year’s over-subscribed waitlist means we’re going bigger
This year sees a move to Conway Hall for the conference. 2016’s growing waitlist indicated our audience was expanding and that we’d need to up our capacity in order to fit all the editorial enthusiasts in! It’s a beautiful Grade II-listed building in the heart of London and we’re very excited about welcoming our audience through its doors.

2. Hear from Popeye Magazine’s editor-in-chief Takahiro Kinoshita
ModMag has always been an international affair with speakers from across Europe and the USA featuring on the line-up. This year we’re thrilled to be flying in Takahiro Kinoshita, editor-in-chief of Popeye Magazine from Japan for a rare public presentation. Through live, on-stage translation, Takahiro will be guiding us through the mag’s history and how he went about reinventing its pages when it was at threat of going under. Attendees can expect something pretty special!

3. A panel discussion with past speakers
With four ModMags under our belt, now feels like a good time to check back in with some of the standout magazines that made a real impact at previous editions of the conference. As well as looking back, we’ll also be asking for publishers for their predictions and hopes for the industry moving forward. We’ll be announcing the panel line-up in a couple of weeks so keep an eye out on the ModMag event page.

4. Pop-up shop and learning about printing
The last four years of ModMag have benefited from a brilliant collection of partners and supporters, without whom, the conference would not exist. They’re helping to make the fifth ModMag extra special, providing our attendees with beautifully printed treats and goodies. Park Communications will be on hand to talk printing, if the day gets you thinking about making your own mag, and there’ll be lovely things from Commercial, Monotype, Fedrigoni and more. Our pop-up shop will be returning, we’ll be providing all our guests with lunch, and we’ve got a few other fun things in the works too.

5. More speakers to be announced…
Alongside the panel lineup, we’ll be announcing our final speakers in the coming weeks. We feel it’s always important to combine talks from established magazines with talks from emerging titles in order to provide a broad, honest portrayal of the world of magazine publishing. The final additions will join the speakers below:

Anja Aronowsky Cronberg — Editor-in-chief/founder, Vestoj (France)
Mirko Borsche — Bureau Mirko Borsche (Germany)
Tony Brook — Co-founder, Unit Editions (UK)
Francesco Franchi — Managing Editor, la Repubblica (Italy)
Lydia Garnett — Co-editor-in-chief, Accent (UK)
Takahiro Kinoshita — Editor-in-chief, Popeye (Japan)
Owen Pritchard — Editor, It’s Nice That (UK)
