Beyond ‘fake news’ – Second Thoughts on European journalism
Europe’s identity is in flux, as the continent responds to a range of pressures including Brexit, Russian expansion and the arrival of refugees and migrants. We turn to journalism to help us understand these changes, but the media itself is changing fast, and the resulting confusion can lead variously to anger, fear and extremism.
Second Thoughts takes a step back from the fray, presenting a series of discussions between journalists as they try to understand these changes and the ways in which we see the world. Covering subjects like disinformation, patriotism and propaganda, they take the long view to show the various forces at work and the paradoxes and misconceptions inherent in the terms themselves.
Jointly published by FROH! and n-ost, the conversations were conducted during the n-ost media conference ‘On the Tightrope’ in Moscow, and there’s a distinctly Russian flavour to the coverage.
